Moorabbin Veterinary Hospital

The first time we meet most of our new patients is in a consultation at their first vaccinations when they are very young.

We provide consultations for illness, puppy and kitten checks, routine health checks, vaccinations, heartworm injections, geriatric care, behaviour concerns, AQIS export, microchipping and much more.

Routine health checks

When your pet is due for a health check, we will send a reminder letter to you in the mail or email.

For the majority of our patients, each year we provide health check ups and preventative care. Preventative care will include vaccinations, heartworm and intestinal worming. During these visits we will discuss your pet’s health and behaviour and carry out a complete physical examination, which includes weight check, auscultation of the heart and chest, and oral exam.

These visits are tailored to suit both age and breed. Pets, like us, have a higher likelihood of certain illnesses at different ages. As your pet becomes older we will concentrate on different health issues with a strong emphasis on preventative health care. Certain tests, such as blood, urine, or faecal tests, will be recommended for specific age groups. These tests monitor for early onset of diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid hyperactivity, urinary tract infection, worm infestation. Some tests, such as X-rays, will monitor for heart problems, disc and arthritic disease.

The early recognition of health problems will help ensure your pet is as happy and full of life as can be.

Referral to Specialists

We consult with registered veterinary specialists on a regular basis. We commonly refer cases that require special diagnostic tests or a specialist opinion. We can refer eye, skin, behaviour, medical, dental and surgical cases. If you think your pet requires a referral, please speak to your veterinarian.

Pathology

MicroscopeMost pathology can be done in house using a combination of microscopes, urine, skin and faecal testing equipment. We examine smears, swabs and needle aspirates obtained from inside ears, lumps or on the skin using the microscopes. Urinary tract infection and diabetes are found using our urine testing equipment. Intestinal parasites are uncovered using faecal tests. We culture hair and skin to diagnose dermatophyte (ringworm) infections.

There are samples that need to be sent away to a specialised veterinary pathology lab (Gribbles) and these results are generally available within 8-24 hours.
