Desexing

Moorabbin Veterinary Hospital’s extremely experienced team performs cat and dog desexing under the highest safety conditions. Our team is experienced in same-day desexing, so your pet doesn’t need to stay overnight and the whole procedure as straightforward as possible.

Why is desexing important?

Moorabbin Vet Hospital strongly encourages all owners to have their pets desexed, to reduce unwanted pregnancies and to eliminate or reduce the risk of reproductive infections or cancers such as

  • Mammary tumours
  • Testicular tumours
  • Pyometra
  • Prostate disease
  • Urinary tract infection

Desexing can also aid in reducing undesirable behavioural traits, such as frequent urination by male dogs and urine spraying by cats. Desexing can also reduce the likelihood of roaming or runaway-tendencies, which has the flow on effect of making your pet less likely to get into fights or get hit by a car.

What to remember on the day of the procedure?

Please ensure your pet has been fasted from midnight the night before the procedure.

Free access to water is fine but ideally should be removed 30 minutes prior to leaving home in the morning.

We also recommend taking your pet out for a toilet walk before coming into the clinic.

What happens during the procedure and after?

MVH ensures that every desexing procedure is as stress-free as possible. On arrival to hospital, your pet will be given an injection or what we refer to as a ‘Pre-med’. This contains both pain relief and a sedative medication.

An intravenous catheter will be placed so that anaesthesia and intravenous fluids can be administered.

During the procedure, our highly trained nurses will use multi-parameter monitoring equipment to keep an eye on your pet’s heart rate, blood pressure and expired c02 to ensure they are tolerating the anaesthesia and allow us to tailor an anaesthesia plan as needed.

On recovery, your patient will have the vitals checked frequently and will be administered additionally pain relief as well as being offered a small meal.

On discharge, one of our surgery nurses will provide you with all the important discharge information you need to know, including medication instructions, how best to care for your pet during their recovery and answer any questions you may have.

We will see your pet back 12-14 days post op for their suture removal and to check how their wound has healed. This visit is included in the cost of the desexing.
